album cover redesign

A challenge to discover: what makes a good album cover? How do you interpret the music into a visual piece that intrigues and engages listeners? Answering these questions were my main goal in completing these redesigns. I wanted to keep the photography true to the artists and represent the story they tell with their respective albums.

The divine feminine

As a photo design project, we were tasked with redesigning a CD album cover. I decided on ‘The Divine Feminine’ by Mac Miller, a rap/urban album highlighting the beauty of women and loving them. I wanted the new album art to feel soft and rich as you looked through it, with just a little bit of edge to it derived from the rap stylings of the music.

How to: friend, love, & freefall

When examining and adoring vinyl records, it was hard to pick just one album to redesign. My choice was ‘How to: Love, Friend, Freefall’ by Rainbow Kitten Surprise. I love this album, but never its cover art. The music tells the story of struggles and feeling trapped, like you want out. It also touches on love, but not without adding an overall moodiness with a folk feel. When coming up with a concept for this cover, I looked to the band to see the diverse and quirky look they maintain. The lead singer comes out as gay in this album and fights with his upbringing in the church. I decided to tie in some homage to the movie ‘Call Me By Your Name’ with its memorable scene of the gay lead character and a peach.
